What is an HRA rent receipt?
If you receive House Rent Allowance from your employer, you need proof of the rent you paid to claim the exemption. A rent receipt is that proof: who paid, who received, how much, for which period, and for which property. Most employers ask for these at the end of the financial year, and for your landlord’s PAN once your annual rent goes over ₹1,00,000.
What your employer will usually want
- Landlord’s name and the full address of the property.
- The amount and the exact period each receipt covers.
- Receipts covering the whole year you’re claiming for.
- Your landlord’s PAN, if annual rent is above ₹1,00,000.
- A revenue stamp on cash payments above ₹5,000 — commonly requested, and worth checking with your employer.
